Nikhil Chaudhary’s talk aims at showcasing his graphic narratives situated in Mumbai. While speaking about his experience of living in one of India’s
iconic cities, the artist also seeks to present urban planning challenges on-ground as depicted in his comics.
Starting with the dense but thriving neighbourhood where the artist lived, the discourse will move outwards looking at how redevelopment is shaping urban life and then culminate at the city’s ecologically-fragile coastal fringe.
Nikhil Chaudhary intends to share how the urban condition influences an artist’s perspective and the nuances of his drawn expressions. At the same time, he looks at the medium of comics and graphic novels as a potent tool in making discerning communities aware of socio-environmental concerns.

Der indische Comickünstler Nikhil Chaudhary stellt in einem Vortrag mit anschließendem Gespräch seine grafischen Erzählungen zur Millionenstadt Mumbai vor.
Während er seine Erfahrungen als Einwohner dieser ikonischen indischen Stadt teilt, möchte er mit seinen Comics zugleich auf die Herausforderungen für die
Stadtplanung aufmerksam machen.
Beginnend mit der dicht besiedelten, dynamischen Wohngegend, in der der Künstler selbst eine Zeitlang ansässig war, weitet Chaudhary den Blickwinkel hin auf die Neugestaltung urbaner Räume und deren Einfluss auf menschliche Lebensräume. Außerdem diskutiert er den fragilen ökologischen Zustand der Küstengebiete von Mumbai.

Über den Künstler:
Nikhil Chaudhary ist Architekt und Städteplaner aus Indien. Momentan macht er einen Master in „Public Policy“ an der Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. Seit 2011 zeichnet Chaudhary Comics. Bevor er nach Deutschland zog, war er für den Umwelt-Think-Tank „World Resources Institute“ in Mumbai tätig. Neben seiner Arbeit für verschiedene indische Kommunen im Kontext eines nachhaltigen Städtebaus bemüht Chaudhary sich, die vielen Facetten einer rasanten Urbanisierung in Indien in Comics abzubilden.
About the artist:
Nikhil Chaudhary is an architect/urban planner from India who is presently pursuing his M.A. in Public Policy at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. Simultaneously, he is a self-taught graphic artist and has independently created comics since 2011. Before moving to Germany, Nikhil was a Senior Associate with the World Resources Institute India, an environmental think tank based in Mumbai. While working with and building technical capacity for multiple city governments under sustainable urban development initiatives, Nikhil also sought to communicate the diverse aspects of India’s rapid urbanisation through his passion for graphic storytelling.
